Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction in Huntington and Staten Island

Breast reconstruction is a type of surgery for women who have all or part of a breast removed (mastectomy). Breast reconstruction can help you feel more comfortable about how you look. Please take note that a reconstructed breast may never match the look and feel of your natural breast.

Breast reconstruction can be done with a breast implant (filled with saline or silicone), natural tissue flaps (using skin fat and sometimes muscle from your own body), or a combination of both methods.

Breast implant:

  • Less able to mimic the look and feel of a natural breast
  • Will likely lose some sensation in the breast
  • Surgery is less extensive and shorter
  • 1-2 night hospital stay for the first procedure
  • Implant will likely need to be replaced during lifetime
  • Recovery includes 3-4 weeks and few scars
  • Some risk of surgical complications

Natural tissue flaps:

  • Better able to mimic the look and feel of a natural breast
  • Will likely lose some sensation in the breast and tissue donation site
  • Surgery is more extensive and a longer process
  • 3-4 night hospital stay for the procedure
  • Tissue flaps will not need to be replaced during lifetime
  • Recover includes 4-6 weeks and many scars
  • Some risks of surgical complications

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
