Excess, sagging or loose skin on the body can dramatically impact the way you look, feel and function. Massive weight loss, pregnancy and/or natural aging can lead to skin being stretched to the point where it cannot and will not rebound on its own. A body lift surgically removes excess skin and tissue to re-shape and contour the body to reveal your best shape. Your Body Lift could be comprised of several different procedures in order to help you achieve your goals, the selection of which will be determined upon your consultation and discussion with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Christine Blaine.
How Does a Body Lift Work?
The term body lift refers to the surgical removal of excess skin and tissue on the body and could be comprised of the following procedures:
- Panniculectomy- removes the excess skin flap (pannus) from the lower abdomen
- Abdominoplasty– removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal wall muscles (repair of diastasis recti)
- Mastopexy (Breast Lift)- lifts and repositions the skin and tissue of the breasts
- Back Lift
- Thighplasty (Thigh Lift)
- Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)
- Liposuction to further reduce fat and contour specific areas
Candidates for a Body Lift
The ideal candidate for a body lift is someone who suffers from excess skin and tissue around the body and is ready to make an aesthetic and functional improvement in their life. Patients should be at a stable and maintainable weight, be in good general health, a nonsmoker, and be committed to continuing a healthy lifestyle after the procedure. Many patients who seek a Body Lift have undergone a bariatric procedure, continuing supervision under that bariatric doctor to ensure optimal health and weight stability.
What to Expect
Your Body Lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia and is typically performed as an out-patient procedure, though occasionally an overnight or 23 hour hospital stay is warranted due to a patient’s specific medical or age-related needs. Dr. Blaine has privileges at many local area hospitals in both Staten Island, Staten Island and Manhattan. Those in a lower risk category can have their Body Lift performed in the AAAASF certified operating suites at Blaine Plastic Surgery and will go home the same day. Like any surgical procedure, it is important to have a trusted person to accompany you to and from surgery. Some patients opt to hire a private duty nurse to assist and monitor vitals during the immediate postoperative period either at home or at a local area hotel (we are pleased to offer group rates at a local private, boutique hotel).
Body Lift Recovery
Recovery time after a body lift will vary per patient. Most patients should expect to take 10 to 14 days off from work to recover from the procedure. Refraining from exercise and any heavy lifting are essential to expeditious healing. Post surgical compression garments are recommended and should be worn for at least four weeks post-surgery. While the results of your body lift are immediate, they will get better and better over time as swelling resolves and the body heals with final results seen between 6 and 12 months post procedure.
