Having a child is one of the best rewards that life can give. However, some of the negative side effects that come after childbirth, such as weight gain and body distortion can have new mothers feeling uncomfortable in their own skin. Even with a strict diet and exercise routine, some moms cannot get rid of loose abdominal skin, stretch marks, and sagging breasts. That’s why they choose to restore their youthful appearance with a mommy makeover procedure!

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover procedure consists of a combination of procedures to help new moms regain their confidence. Some common procedures of a mommy makeover include breast augmentation, body contouring, tummy tuck, and skin rejuvenation. Each mommy makeover is tailored to fit a patient’s individual wants and needs.

Mommy makeovers are extremely popular because several cosmetic procedures can be combined with a single recovery period. It allows for mothers to get the rest they need and deserve without sacrificing too much time. Whether a woman is insecure about her stretch marks, sagging from breastfeeding, or loose skin on her abdomen, a mommy makeover can help give her a body she is comfortable showing off, even with a baby on her hip!

How Long Should a Woman Wait After Childbirth Before a Mommy Makeover?

All cosmetic surgeons can agree that every woman’s safe period of when to have a mommy makeover is different. For some women, they are safe to have this procedure 3 months after childbirth. Other women will need to wait a year before it is safe for them to have a mommy makeover. Below are some of the questions women should ask themselves to see how long they should wait before having this procedure:

  • Am I Sure I Don’t Want Any More Children?

Women who are interested in this procedure should put it on hold until they are positive they are not having more children. This is to avoid repeat surgery in the future, costing extra time and money.

  • Has my Body Fully Recovered from Pregnancy?

This answer varies widely from woman to woman. If a woman does not give her body adequate time to fully recover from pregnancy, her body may change after the procedure. In addition, a woman should give her body enough time to fully heal so she knows exactly what parts of her body she wants to focus on during her procedure.

  • How Long do I Plan on Breastfeeding?

Women should wait anywhere between three to six months until after they have stopped breastfeeding to undergo this procedure. This ensures that the breasts are finished changing.

  • How Much Help do I Have?

It’s important to keep in mind that a mommy makeover procedure requires a recovery period. In addition to taking it easy when caring for their infant, women who undergo this surgery should refrain form household activities for about 2-4 weeks.

When Should I Consult a Plastic Surgeon About a Mommy Makeover?

No matter if it’s a day, a week, or a month after childbirth, you can schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon anytime about your mommy makeover procedure. Some like to schedule a consultation as soon as possible to find the optimal time to have the procedure. Others like to wait to see how their body changes after childbirth and to regulate their hormones so any residual pregnancy hormones do not affect their decision.

To Tell or Not to Tell: Keeping Plastic Surgery a Secret

Over the years, plastic surgery has been accepted more and more by society. Even with this new acceptance, many people struggle with telling their friends and family in fear of their loved ones’ reactions. Should you keep your plastic surgery a secret? It all depends on what’s the right decision for you and your body.

Why You Want to Keep Plastic Surgery a Secret

Many people choose to not broadcast their plastic surgery procedure because they consider it a private matter. You are entitled to your privacy! Keep in mind that it will be easier to keep some procedures a secret compared to others. Procedures that require little to no downtime, or ones that are on a part of your body that aren’t visible on a daily basis, like a tummy tuck, will be easier to hide. On the other hand, with more noticeable procedures, like a facelift or breast augmentation, you may want to be ready to answer some questions from your friends, family, or coworkers. If you don’t get any questions, it’s really no one else’s business but your own.

Fear of Being Judged

With the continued growth of plastic surgery procedures every year, one can argue that going under the knife has become more acceptable compared to years ago. In addition, celebrities and mainstream media talk more positively about cosmetic procedures, making them more acceptable in our society. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, 71% of their respondents think our society is less judgmental about cosmetic surgery compared to just five years ago. Despite this growing acceptance, many people do not share the news about their procedure in fear of being judged by their peers. If you are worried that your friends and family are going to be unsupportive of your decision, the most you can do is assure them that you are making this decision for the right reason. At the end of the day, you have to focus on your happiness and confidence!

Why You Want to Tell People about Your Plastic Surgery Procedure

Have a Support System

One of the biggest reasons why people choose to tell their friends and family about their upcoming cosmetic procedure is because they need a support system throughout the process. Many procedures, like body contouring or a rhinoplasty, have a longer recovery period. Because of this, you will need to tell your spouse, a family member, or friend, so they can help you during this period of time.

Be Confident in the New You

Most people who consider a cosmetic procedure are looking to gain confidence about something that has upset them for years. Be proud of the new you and love the skin you’re in! You don’t have to make a loud announcement in front of your friends and family; you can either casually bring it up in conversation (before or after your surgery) or wait for people to ask you about your new appearance. No matter how people may react, it’s important to remember that your procedure was to boost your confidence and happiness, and you should not let anyone’s opinions make you feel bad about your decision.

Inspire Others

If you have already made the decision to have a procedure, you know that it’s not one that was made lightly. You may not even know it, but your friends or family members may be thinking about plastic surgery, but are scared of what his or her peers may think. Help inspire them to be more confident in their decision and themselves!

No matter your reason for getting a procedure, the choice of whether or not to tell people is your decision to make. New Year, New You

January has always been an ideal month for change. It’s filled with New Year’s resolutions, new goals and aspirations, and most importantly, it marks the beginning of a clean slate. So whether it’s been a longtime, personal ambition to achieve the look you’ve always wanted – or you’re simply looking to start the New Year off in a dramatic, transformative way – these are the top 7 most impactful procedures to consider for 2016.

The hype behind waist cinchers is nothing compared to the instant and long-lasting effects of a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty – the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. Whether it’s a full abdominoplasty or a mini tummy tuck, the procedure is a maximum of 4 hours (but can be as little as 1). The surgery can be an in-patient or outpatient procedure, depending on your situation’s severity.

Your nose’s relation to the entirety of your face can change your whole appearance. Some contributing factors behind a distorted facial balance include a nose’s size, profile, tip, nostrils and nasal symmetry. Among the most popular? Visible humps or depressions on the bridge. Rhinoplasty is also used to correct structural defects in the nose to improve impaired breathing – like a deviated septum, one of the most common.

Breast augmentation – Enhancing the size or volume in your breasts is the second most popular cosmetic surgery that women undergo. The breast implant can be inserted through incision into a pocket under the pectoral muscle, or directly behind the breast tissue. Patients who have had this surgery report higher feelings of confidence, attractiveness, and femininity than ever before.

The surgery removes fat from the male abdomen, back, flanks, neck and breast – breast being one of the most pressing for clients who choose to go this route, due to Gynecomastia (the swelling of breast tissues in boys and men). While there’s no specific cause, the condition can affect one or both breasts, and cause a serious amount of pain.  Liposuction removes the fat, but not the breast gland tissue thanks to several small incisions.

Commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, Blepharoplasty serves the purpose of refreshing the area surrounding your eyes. It’s used to treat loose or sagging skin, puffiness, eyelid bags, drooping lower eyelids, excess skin and wrinkles. While some may seem like pure cosmetic reasons, the surgery can resolve medical issues like impairing vision. Additionally, a brow lift (or forehead life) can reduce horizontal wrinkle lines, improve frown lines, raise sagging brows and set eyebrows in a youthful and alert position.

Once you’ve been healed, and the details of the surgery are all said and done, the incision lines from a facelift (or rhytidectomy) are extremely concealed within the hairline and natural contours of the face and ear. Even though it can’t possibly turn back time and reverse your age, the procedure truly does make a drastic, youthful impact on your appearance by improving the sagging in the middle of the face, deep creases below lower eyelids and along the nose, loss of fat, jowls, loose skin and fatty deposits.

On a more practical note, excisional surgery is performed to remove the entire cancerous growth that has formed on particular areas of the skin. The excised tissue is then observed to confirm that all cancerous cells have been removed. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent occurring skin cancer form, and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form. Still weary? It has an accepted cure rate of 92 percent when this technique is used.

5 Must Have Procedures Before the Holidays

The holiday season is upon us. That means parties with family and friends, plenty of memories to be made and pictures that will last a lifetime. You want to look your best for those holiday parties and all of those photos. If you are not happy with your appearance and want to improve it, then give yourself an early Christmas present. With Dr. Christine Blaine, you can get fast results right before hosting your loved ones to celebrate the season. Here are five quick procedures you can have before the holidays at Blaine Plastic Surgery.

1. Breast Augmentation

Have you always wanted larger looking breasts? A breast augmentation from Dr. Blaine will have your breasts looking full and lifted in time for the holidays. With a choice between silicone and saline implants, Dr. Blaine will help you pick the perfect size to complement your body and meet your aesthetic goals. The procedure is quick, and only requires less than 1 week off of work! Get ready to look great in your holiday outfits.

2. Tummy Tuck

We have all tried to lose weight by dieting and exercising on a daily basis, but sometimes it is not enough. Your waistline might not be where you want it and even if you lose the weight, you could be left with excess skin on your abdomen. Right before you stuff yourself with holiday treats, consider a tummy tuck.

This procedure removes the extra, flabby skin and fat from all parts of the abdomen. It also will tighten the muscle in the area and give your stomach a firmness you can feel confident in. The surgery takes roughly 1-4 hours to complete and will look natural afterwards. You will be fully recovered in 2-4 weeks. The holiday season is the best time to do this because you will be wearing heavier clothes.

3. Botox and Fillers

Are you feeling self-conscious when you smile because of wrinkles or age lines on your face? Dr. Blaine’s noninvasive procedures such as Botox or fillers will take years off of your skin and bring back that youthful look you had years ago. Botox will eliminate the wrinkles and allow the patient to feel comfortable in their own skin again. When Botox is used early, it can help prevent lines from being seen in the first place.

Botox can help to treat numerous medical conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms, underarm sweating, eye twitching, overactive bladder and more. Results can hold up for roughly four months. You will be looking photo-ready for all of those holiday pictures!

Fillers such as Juvaderm, Voluma, and Restalyn are other great options for restoring volume to your face for a subtle but youthful look. Improve fullness in your cheekbones, lips, or anywhere else lacking volume to look picture perfect for the holidays.

4. Sciton BBL, Photofacial, & Skin Tyte

All of these facial procedures are quick and painless, and will have you looking the best you’ve looked in years! The holidays are the perfect time to come into Blaine Plastic Surgery for one of these quick treatments. Photofacial will remove the browns and reds from your skin for a glowing and even skin tone. Skin Tyte will begin the process of youthful skin for years to come, as it helps stimulate collagen. Sciton BBL is a laser hair removal treatment that will ensure you never have to shave again!

5. Blepharoplasty

Do you have a week off of work around the holidays? This is a great time to have a Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, at Blaine Plastic Surgery. This procedure will give you a rested youthful appearance, and you will be guaranteed to have people asking you if you just returned from vacation!

Contact Blaine Plastic Surgery today for a quick consultation. Any of these procedures will have you looking your best for the holiday season.

Feeling good, but looking tired?

So you’re getting the recommended 8+ hours of sleep every night and you feel great, alert and the furthest thing from tired. So why do you look the exact opposite, as if you haven’t had a wink of sleep in days? Believe it or not, there are so many factors that can be the cause of your tired appearance. Some of these remedies are a quick fix while others require more attention and even money. Here are your options:

Water is the key to life

It’s true. Think about it; water makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. A lack of water will not only lead to dehydration but may be the reason you do not look as awake as you feel.

Drink plenty of water every day. And yes water, not sugary drinks that can actually do more to dehydrate your body. Many doctors recommend drinking eight 8-ounces glasses of water a day. If you start and end your day with a glass of water each, you’re bound to see a great improvement in your complexion.

Focus on your diet and take supplements

Sometimes those bag under your eyes don’t need home remedies, just a home-cooked meal. Stay away from artificial sweeteners, excess sugar, fried and salty foods, refined carbs, and alcohol. Instead, try any or all of these superfoods that will work wonders for your complexion and make you look a lot more awake:

  • Green tea
  • Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Tofu
  • Kiwi
  • Brazil nuts
  • Dandelion greens

Iron deficiency will not only make you feel tired all the time but can take quite a toll on your appearance. Even if you don’t actually qualify as being iron “deficient”, chances are your body will love it if you focus on adding a little more iron into your diet. Iron supplements are a quick remedy for this issue that you can add to the daily multivitamin you should already be taking.

Cosmetic Procedures

Unfortunately, some signs of tiredness in your face cannot easily be fixed by following the above home remedies. If you do not see an improvement in your appearance after trying to adjust your diet and drinking more water, there may be an underlying cause for your symptoms. Bags under the eyes or lines around the eye area can be hereditary or a cause of aging and sun exposure.

Fortunately, these unwanted features do not have to be a permanent part of your appearance. Various cosmetic procedures focus directly on the signs of aging that can be responsible for the tired look on your face each and every day.

Botox is perfect for fighting all kinds of wrinkles, the number one indicator of a tired look. This injectable goes straight into the muscle, causing it to firm, making those wrinkles disappear.

Juvederm is an injectable substance that works to replace the skin’s volume that naturally deteriorates over time, filling areas of the face with collagen and elastin for a more youthful and less tired look.

Otherwise known as eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty tightens the loose or sagging skin of the upper eyelids or the bags under the eyes that results in a more awake appearance.

It is important to give a cosmetic procedure the same amount of serious consideration that one would give a surgical procedure. If you feel that a cosmetic procedure is the right fix for your tired appearance, schedule a consultation with Dr. Blaine today at either our Huntington or Staten Island office.

It’s time to get back your awake and youthful appearance!

Why Winter Is The Best Time for Plastic Surgery

So you’ve decided that you want to get plastic surgery, but you’re not sure when you should go forth with the procedure. While you may be anxiously awaiting your transformation, it’s important that you take the time to plan accordingly. Here are a few reasons why winter is the best time for plastic surgery.

The Perfect Time for Recovery

Why Winter Is The Best Time for Plastic Surgery

Winter is a great season for plastic surgery because it’s the perfect time for recovery. With the weather being cold and not many activities taking place, it’s the perfect time to stay at home and recover from your procedure. Recovery from plastic surgery is one of the most difficult aspects of the procedure, and getting adequate rest is crucial for achieving the results you desire. Because you’re more likely to be less active during the winter, it’s an ideal time of the year to get a procedure done. Plus, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love curling up on the couch under some cozy blankets and watching TV or reading a book?

The Perfect Gift For the Holidays

If you’re sick of getting useless holiday gifts, or gifts that you despise and want to return, then waiting to get your procedure done in the winter may be the perfect solution! It has become extremely common for people to gift their loved ones cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. Consider asking your family or significant other for your procedure as a gift for the holidays, like Christmas. If they planned on getting you a gift regardless, it might as well be something you actually want or need. It’s a win-win situation for all!

The Perfect Time To Heal

Why Winter Is The Best Time for Plastic Surgery

Unlike spring and summer when you’re likely to wear less clothing and have your skin more exposed, the winter is the perfect time for plastic surgery because your incisions and scars will be covered. With the weather being colder during the winter months, you’re likely to wear clothing and layers that will cover your body, and possibly the area of your procedure. This is an advantage in your recovery as your incisions will be less exposed and more likely to heal without any problems. With your skin being covered by layers, this also gives your scars more of an opportunity to heal. This way, you can feel less self-conscious about any scarring that may occur, resulting in a more comfortable recovery.

The Perfect Time To De-Stress

Even though you may get some time off from work during the holiday season, this time of year can be extremely stressful for many people. In fact, studies show that stress and anxiety are often at their highest points during this time of year for women, who typically take on the responsibility of shopping for gifts, preparing meals and decorating the home. Since the winter seems to be a time when you need to de-stress the most, it makes perfect sense to plan your procedure during this time of year and hit two birds with one stone: de-stressing from the holidays while recovering from your procedure.

The Perfect Way to Start A New Year

Why Winter Is The Best Time for Plastic Surgery

Every new year is a new opportunity. There’s nothing like starting off the new year on a fresh clean slate all while feeling great about yourself. Planning your plastic surgery procedure during the winter is the perfect setup for this. Having your plastic surgery procedure done in the winter also allows for you to be fully recovered by the summer, which is of significance when it comes to procedures in areas of your body that will be exposed by your bathing suit. Plan your plastic surgery procedure in the winter and you’ll be ready for a new year and a new you!

How to Look Your Best This Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us! This is an exciting time of year for get-togethers with friends and family, as well as lots of holiday parties. With each event comes tons of PHOTOS! From selfies, to group selfies, to memorable family portraits, these images will forever be a part of your history. If these thoughts provoke angst, it’s time to talk about how to improve your appearance to look your very best for the holiday season.

With only a few weeks left, surgery is probably not the way to go for a quick fix. As much as I love to operate, there are more timely options that yield the same immediate or almost immediate results. Most people now have heard of Botox and fillers. Here is a run-down of what these are: Botox is a chemical that is used to stop the muscles of your face from forming those unwanted lines, especially on the forehead, between the eyebrows (Glabellar) and around the eyes (Crow’s Feet). It will not make those stubborn lines disappear immediately, but will soften them within about 3-5 days and with upkeep, can eventually get rid of those lines for good. You may have also heard of Dysport. It is a chemical similar to Botox, but takes effect a few days sooner! Both are typically used interchangeably.

The next topic is fillers. These include Juvederm, Restalyn, Voluma, etc, etc… There are A LOT. Simply put, a filler is used to fill in lines. These typically include the nasolabial fold (smile lines next to the nose) and marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth down). Voluma is a relatively new product that is used around the cheeks to help give a bit of a lift to that area. Fillers can also be used to plump up that upper lip! That would look great in pictures, even if you don’t make that fish/kiss lips look!

The best thing to do is to come in for a consultation to determine what would be best for you! Hurry in, before someone takes an unexpected snapshot of you! The smartphones are everywhere!

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
