What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most common and time-tested forms of cosmetic plastic surgery in the world. This procedure involves removing excess fat from areas of the body commonly including:

  • Inner and Outer Thighs
  • Hips
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Upper and Lower Back
  • Chin
  • Waist
  • Arms

Although liposuction is a very effective method for removing excess fat, the procedure itself is not a treatment for obesity or weight loss, nor should it be seen as a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise.

About The Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is popular in part because it is an effective, safe and minimally invasive method of removing excess fat from the body.

The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending upon the areas being treated. Liposuction begins with an injection of local anesthesia to the areas where fat will be removed. Once the anesthesia is applied, the surgeon inserts a small needle, called a cannula, into the affected area and begins to withdraw the fat. Once the fat is removed it is either disposed of or harvested for re-injection to other parts of the body (commonly the breasts, face, and/or buttocks).

Who Should Consider Liposuction?

Liposuction has long been a popular procedure for addressing the accumulation of excess fat in the body. As such, it is considered one of the safest cosmetic procedures available today.

The liposuction procedure can provide a fat reduction solution to many different patients, especially those who suffer from:

  • Difficulty in losing fat reserves
  • Stubborn, localized fat deposits
  • Unbalanced proportions

Liposuction patients can expect to see lifelong benefits from the procedure so long as they maintain a healthy diet and a regular exercise regimen.

Most patients are able to return to normal activities within days of the procedure. Patients should expect some swelling and bruising immediately following their procedure, but can often return to work within a couple of days. Some soreness and residual swelling may persist for one to two months after the surgery, so it is important that patients understand that it can take several months to see their final results.
