A thigh lift procedure reshapes and restructures the thighs by removing excess skin and fat. This body contouring procedure is often requested by patients who have lost a significant amount of weight or those patients who are simply unhappy with the appearance of their upper and inner thighs. Thigh lifts result in better overall thigh contour and in achieving desired body proportions, as this procedure addresses excess fat and smooths and tightens skin. A thigh lift is also commonly referred to as a thighplasty and always involves some liposuction of the medial thighs at the same time.
The Thigh Lift Procedure
A thigh lift is a surgical procedure, performed under general anesthesia. The procedure begins by making a small incision (or two) on each thigh to allow for liposuction to be performed. Once the excess fat is removed via liposuction, the thigh lift incisions are then made, often a vertical incision extending from the groin to the point of furthest skin laxity of the medial thigh, to remove the excess skin. For some patients, there is also a groin line incision. The result from a thigh lift is a slimmer and more visually appealing thigh and improved thigh contour.
Oftentimes some additional liposuction will be performed on the outer thighs at the time of a thigh lift to help slim down and contour the thighs circumferentially. For patients concerned with a dimpled appearance of the thigh, resulting from cellulite, Cellfina can also be performed to help achieve a smoother appearance.
Post Procedure Considerations
Swelling and soreness are typical effects of this surgery, but both will gradually subside over the first 1-2 weeks after the procedure. While full recovery and final results may take up to six months, most patients can resume normal daily activity within about a week of the procedure. The results of a thigh lift can last a lifetime, provided that the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle.
Who Should Consider a Thigh Lift?
A thigh lift is an effective way to reshape the lower body and address the effects of weight fluctuations and aging. Thigh lifts are best suited for patients in relatively good health. Ideal patients are those who have also reached a stable and maintainable weight, as any major weight gain or weight loss after the procedure can compromise the results of the thigh lift.
