When there is excess skin and tissue on the abdomen, abdominoplasty is the most effective option to restore a flat, tightened stomach. In a traditional tummy tuck, the excess skin is removed and vertically pulled down with a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen. When there is a larger amount of excess skin and tissue, it may be necessary to also tighten the skin horizontally. At Blaine Plastic Surgery, we offer Fleur-De-Lis (FDL) abdominoplasty that can tighten and reshape an abdomen with excessive loose skin and tissue.
A tummy tuck is usually performed for those who have some loose skin or tissue after weight loss or pregnancy. When there has been a large amount of weight loss, the amount of leftover stretched skin can be extensive. A traditional tummy tuck only removes excess skin and tightens it vertically. If the skin was also stretched horizontally, this may require an additional incision to remove skin and tighten the abdomen.
FDL Tummy Tuck
With the Fleur-De-Lis abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, two large incisions are made, one across the lower abdomen and one that extends upward at the middle to the breastbone. For large amounts of excess skin removal, this is the most effective option to flatten the abdomen. The excess abdominal skin and tissue are removed, and the remaining skin is pulled and tightened into the center and downward to the pelvis. This procedure addresses both the vertical and horizontal stretching that occurred and reforms a flat abdomen.
While there is a more noticeable scar with Fleur-De-Lis (FDL) abdominoplasty, those who have lost extensive weight can finally achieve a tightened abdomen that is more flattering and comfortable. For many, it is a worthwhile side effect in comparison to what is achieved.
